==Usage==
This [[Wikipedia:Template messages|template]] is used in articles to identify sentences or short passages with information or analysis that has one or more [[Wikipedia:Citing sources|inline citations]] but which are to [[WP:NOTRS|insufficiently reliable sources]]. It produces a superscripted notation like the following:

:Most people believe in ghosts.<sup>[[Reference|[1]]]</sup>{{Better source}}
<!-- Fake reference -->
:'''References'''
:1. Random tabloid

You can also include a {{para|reason}} note, which displays as a tooltip upon mouse hover, to leave a better record for future editors. For example, the following usage might be appropriate to the arguable claim that "Most people believe in ghosts...":

: {{Tlx|Better source|reason{{=}}citation is the Ghostbusters company website, there must be more objective sources for this|date{{=}}{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}}}}

General template for copy-pasting:

: {{Tlx|Better source|reason{{=}}|date{{=}}{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}}}}

Adding this template to an article places the article into [[:Category:All articles lacking reliable references]] or a dated subcategory thereof, part of a family of categories identifying articles with reliable-sourcing issues. To find all such articles, see [[:Category:Wikipedia articles with sourcing issues]].

=== When not to use ===
Contentious material about [[Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons|living persons]] that is unsourced or poorly sourced should be '''removed immediately'''. Do not tag it: remove it. For more information, see the section on [[WP:BLPREMOVE|contentious material]] in the Biography of Living Persons policy.

Material which is doubtful and harmful may be removed immediately, rather than tagged. See [[Wikipedia:Citing sources#Unsourced material|Unsourced material]].

If no citation is given, use the {{Tlx|Citation needed}} tag instead. If the source given is self-published, use {{tlx|Self-published inline}}. If you think the author has a conflict of interest or is otherwise too close to the subject, use {{Tlx|Third-party inline}}. If the source has been surpassed by a newer, reliable publications that no longer support the claim in the article, use {{tlx|Obsolete source}}.

If you have the time and ability to find a better reference, please do so. Then correct the citation yourself, or correct the article text. After all, {{strong|the ultimate goal is not to merely identify problems, but to fix them}}.
==Usage==

===When to use===
This [[Wikipedia:Templates|template]] indicates that the article needs additional inline citations. This template should be used only for articles where there are some, but insufficient, inline citations to support the material currently in the article. Don't use this tag for articles that contain no unreferenced material, even if all the material is supported by a single citation.

Some editors understand this template to be redundant when it is used on articles clearly marked as [[Wikipedia:Stub|stubs]], since by definition stubs are unlikely to be well referenced.

For articles that have no inline citations at all, but contain some sources, use [[:Template:No footnotes]]. Only use [[:Template:Unreferenced]] for articles that have no references at all.

* For articles about living persons, the more specific template {{tl|BLP sources}} should be used instead.
* For articles containing biomedical information, the more specific template {{tl|Medref}} should be used instead.
* Please consider marking individual unreferenced statements with {{tl|Citation needed}} instead of placing this template.
* If most of an article is supported by inline citations and a few of those use unreliable sources use {{tlx|Unreliable source?|date{{=}}{{#time:F Y}}}} and if you are certain then add the parameters {{tlx|Unreliable source|certain{{=}}y|reason{{=}}{{var|1=your WP:RS-based reason here.}}|date{{=}}{{#time:F Y}}}}

===How to use===
Listed below are four examples of usage:

:{{tlc|Refimprove}}
:{{tlc|Refimprove|2=date={{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}}}}
:{{tlc|Refimprove|section}}&nbsp; (the same as {{Tlx|Refimprove section}})
::This can be made smaller with {{tlc|Refimprove|section|small{{=}}y}} or {{tlc|Refimprove section|small{{=}}y}}
:{{tlc|Refimprove|section|<nowiki>{{subst:DATE}}</nowiki>|talk{{=}}{{var|Talk page section name}}|small{{=}}y}}

According to [[MOS:LAYOUT]], maintenance templates such as this one ought be placed after hatnotes, at the start of the article. That placement is supported by consensus obtained in an RfC at {{section link|Template talk:Refimprove|RfC: Location of Tag}}.

A {{para|talk}} parameter is allowed; setting this to any value will result in the message "See talk page for details." being included in the tag. If the value is a valid anchor on the talk page (''e.g.'', the title of a section or subsection heading), then the talk page link will go directly to that anchor; if not, to the top of the page.

This template also includes support for using the {{para|date}} parameter. Adding this parameter sorts the article into subcategories of [[:Category:Articles needing additional references]] and out of the parent category, allowing the oldest problems to be identified and dealt with first. A [[Wikipedia:Bot policy|bot]] will add this parameter if it is omitted. Be careful '''''not''''' to abbreviate the date, because then it will automatically add a redlinked category instead of the correct category. The simplest way to use this parameter manually is <code><nowiki>{{Refimprove|{{subst:DATE}}}}</nowiki></code> but it can be done more explicitly as <code><nowiki>{{Refimprove|date=</nowiki>{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}}<nowiki>}}</nowiki></code> (both result in the same output). Do ''not'' use <code><nowiki>{{Refimprove|date={{subst:DATE}}}}</nowiki></code>: <code><nowiki>{{subst:DATE}}</nowiki></code> includes the leading <code>date=</code>.

A user warning template, {{tl|Uw-refimprove}}, is available to notify contributors that an article they created needs its referencing improved.

This template adds the article to [[:Category:Articles needing additional references from {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}}]], and [[:Category:All articles needing additional references]], both [[:Category:Hidden categories|hidden categories]].

===General advantage===
* The naming scheme of Refimprove parallels that used for {{tl|Refbegin}}, {{tl|Refend}}, and {{tl|Reflist}}, thereby reducing confusion, in compliance with the [[KISS principle]].

==Differences from related templates==

==={{tl|BLP sources}}===
* Use ''BLP sources'' in [[WP:BLP|articles about living persons]] that need additional references. If the article needs additional references but is not about a living or recently deceased subject, then use ''refimprove''.

==={{Tl|Unreferenced}} and {{Tl|Citation needed}}===
* Use ''Unreferenced'' when there are no inline citations in an article. If there are one or more, but insufficient inline citations in an article, then use ''Refimprove''.
* However, if an article has sufficient inline citations, but the article lacks citations to cover specific information (such as [[WP:PROVEIT|no citation on a quotation]]) then use the inline citation template {{Tl|Citation needed}} to indicate more precisely where additional citations are needed. Unlike ''Citation needed'', ''Refimprove'' places a very conspicuous banner in the article.
* There are also {{Tl|Refimprove section}} and {{tl|Unreferenced section}} for problems that are not article-wide.
* If you decide to change the tag from ''Unreferenced'' to ''Refimprove'', don't forget to update the date stamp in the tag.

==={{Tl|Primary sources}}===
* If an article has sufficient inline citations, but if the citations in an article are from primary sources (see [[WP:USEPRIMARY]]), then use ''{{tl|Primary sources}}''.

==={{Tl|Third-party sources}}===
* If an article has sufficient inline citations, but if the citations in an article are from sources affiliated with the subject (see [[WP:INDY]]), then use ''{{tl|Third-party}}''.

==={{Tl|One source}}===
* If an article has exactly one source '''and''' that single source is likely to result in bias or other problems in the article (e.g., it cites one fringe-y book instead of a good textbook), then use ''{{tl|One source}}''.

==={{Tl|Medref}}===
* If the article contains biomedical information, sources must meet the standards of [[WP:MEDRS]] ("it is vital that the biomedical information in articles be based on reliable, third-party, published sources and accurately reflect current medical knowledge"). If there are inline citations for biomedical information, but they do not meet the required standards, then use ''{{Tl|Medref}}''.

==={{Tl|Citation style}}===
* The ''refimprove'' template is intended for use in articles that need additional citations, while ''citation style'' template is used to request consistency within the citations present in an article (see [[WP:CITEVAR]]). For example, when there is a mixture of [[WP:CITE#Footnotes|footnotes]] or [[WP:CITE#Parenthetical referencing|parenthetical references]].

==={{Tl|No footnotes}}, {{Tl|More footnotes}}===
* ''Refimprove'' can be used when there is no "References" or "Further reading" section in the article.
