Land Rover Owner International or LRO is the market-leading monthly magazine for Land Rover enthusiasts published by Bauer Consumer Media, based in Peterborough, United Kingdom.

History
The first issue of Land Rover Owner was launched in July 1987 and featured a picture of Captain Mark Phillips and his horse on the front cover.  The second issue front cover featured Her Majesty The Queen with her Series III Land Rover. The third front cover marked a change in direction with a Land Rover being driven off-road, which is what has been featured on the front cover ever since.

Land Rover Owner was the brainchild of a group of East Anglian businessmen.  They clearly thought a magazine aimed at Land Rover owners would be snapped up by the country set, hence the pictures of the Royal Family on the first two front covers.

The first issue cost £1 for 40 pages (mainly black and white), but back then there were just two models to write about – the Land Rover and the Range Rover.

The first two issues sold well, but not to the intended audience.  There were tens of thousands of Land Rover enthusiasts who had never had the chance to read a magazine about their favourite subject.  Although Land Rover Owner wasn’t aimed at them , they were snapping it up all the same.

The magazine owners were quick to recognise this and the successful future format of LRO began to take shape.

The event that really captured the public’s imagination two decades ago was the Camel Trophy: rough, tough and politically incorrect, it involved blokes in Land Rovers storming through the world’s remaining wildernesses.  In years to come, the Camel Trophy would become tamer in order to appease its green critics (and thus lose its essential appeal).

It was five years later until greenlining – or ‘green-roading’ as it was known – first featured.

By the end of 1987, LRO was selling 1600 copies a month, including an increasing number in the USA, where the Range Rover had finally been launched (17 years late).  By April 1988 the hunting, shooting and fishing pages were completely replaced by articles more tailored to home mechanics.  April 1988 issue also saw a spoof advert of HUE 166 – the first production Land Rover – up for sale at £20.  Hundreds of readers fell for it.

In its third year the magazine acknowledged the worldwide interest in the marque by changing its title to Land Rover Owner International.  The price had gone up to £1.50, but the issues were much bigger (88 pages) and packed with the vital information that enthusiasts demanded.

The launch of Land Rover’s third model – the Discovery – was met with a bit of suspicion.  Was it a proper Land Rover?  The Series III was the vehicle of choice for most readers back then.  Even if they’d been converted to the new Discovery, they’d have found it difficult to get their hands on one.  In February 1990 LRO reported that demand was so great, would-be customers were having to wait six months.  In May 1990 LRO reported that the Discovery had become the UK’s best-selling 4x4 with 1533 sold in the first three months of 1990.  As 1990 closed, a copy of LRO was 116 pages and cost £1.75.  By now,  the workshop pages had become hugely successful , with the Q&A format that is still so popular today.  LRO carried a report in the December 1990 issue on the fleets of Land Rovers that were bought with much of the money raised from the Band Aid record Do They Know It’s Christmas? and the subsequent Live Aid concert for the starving population of Ethiopia.

In 1991, LRO continued to grow and featured a perfect-bound (as opposed to stapled) spine for the first time.  It also saw the first appearance of the new front cover logo, which has changed little over the subsequent years.

In the mid-1990s LRO was bought by publishing group Emap (which became Bauer Consumer Media), which invested heavily in the title and strengthened its position in the market without losing its essential appeal to enthusiasts.

Meanwhile, the second-generation Range Rover was launched and the Freelander followed in 1997.  The magazine was now something of a publishing phenomenon with well over 200 pages in every issue – in full colour.

15 years later the magazine is still going strong, with the LRO show [LROshow.com] launched in 2008, held at the East of England Show Ground every year, and an LRO website [LRO.com] which is the UK’s only marketplace dedicated to buying and selling Land Rovers.

Dmboxdisambiguation

This is the Asbox ([A]rticle [s]tub [box]) metatemplate. It is the standard template used for creating new or updating existing article stub box templates. It supports virtually all stub template styles.

Usage

image

Filename only and no prefix, e.g. "Image.png" (without quotemarks). Image will be sized at 40x30px.

subject

Placed before the word "article" in the template (e.g. "biographical", producing "This biographical article is (...)").

qualifier

Placed after the word "article" (e.g. "about a musician", producing "(...) article about a musician is (...)").

category

Name only of category to which pages where this template used are added (e.g. "History stubs").

name

Full name of the stub template itself (used for internal reference).

This simple usage should suffice for most stub templates. Additional parameters are described below for advanced use.

Full syntax

Parameters

icon or image

If the image is called with an icon template, icon is set to the full syntax of the template; that's the name of the template, plus any arguments (separated with | ), including the and around it. Icon can also be used to provide the full image markup (include the opening and closing square brackets), if special image settings such as "border" are to be used. If the image is called explicitly image is the name of the image :- pix will likely be required as well, the default value for pix is 40x30.

imagealt may be used to override the default alt text which is set to "Stub icon".

pix

The size of the image in pixels (no need to append px). Only required if image is used and this image requires a size different from the default maximum of 40x30 pixels. (Note that in the interests of standardising the formats of stub messages, images of size 40x30 are much preferred.)

subject and qualifier

This subject article qualifier is a stub ...

Examples:

 • This geography article about a place in Rohan is a stub ...
 • This elementary physics article is a stub ...
 • This article about Rudolph the Red-nosed reindeer is a stub ...

Other parameters

Parameter Description
category The stub category the articles should go in.
tempsort If exists the stub template [?] (and any other templates) will be put in its own category sorted as " " (space) followed by tempsort, otherwise it will be sorted with the value of " " (space) followed by the template name.
category1 An optional second stub category the articles should go in.
tempsort1 If exists the stub template [?] (and any other templates) will be put in its own category sorted as " " (space) followed by tempsort1, otherwise it will be sorted with the value of " " (space) followed by the template name.
category# New (Jan 2015): Since the release of Asbox's module, this template now supports an unlimited number of categories. Just replace '#' with a number, e.g. |category2=Normal stubs, |category99=Over-categorized stubs, etc. Traditionally, category2 was the max, so please only use more than 3 if the additional categories are unique, i.e. not sub or parent categories of the others.
tempsort# New (Jan 2015): Similar to the category params, you can have any number of tempsort params.
note If exists the value [?] will be added, as a "small" note, to the stub template.
name The full page name of the template itself.
demo Has no effect in article space. Prevents category output. Set to anything to enable. (Even 'no' or 'false' will enable it!)
New (Jan 2015): If demo is set, it will show pseudo-categories. If |demo=art then the pseudo-cats shown will only be those visible in article space (i.e. no error/hidden cats). Set |demo=doc to preview the documentation page as well (and all cats). See: Template:Asbox/testcases

Examples

Using image

Based on Viken-geo-stub:

produces:

Using icon and category1

Using icon allows more flexibility in some circumstances than image and pix, since it can be used with templates. Based on Wales-footy-bio-stub:

{{Asbox
| icon = Wales
