{{Em|Do not [[WP:SUBST|substitute]] this template.}}  There is no reason to do so, it will add template code gibberish to the article if you do, and it won't work properly inside a reference citation anyway.

Usage

This template is a "shorthand" template for creating a properly formatted reference citation to The Chicago Manual of Style 16th Ed. (current as of February 2012, without having to specify all the parameters of {{Cite book}}. The CMoS most often cited in articles on grammar and style, and in Wikipedia's own WP:Manual of Style. The template is almost always used inside <ref name="Chicago 16th"></ref>.

If you need to cite the same source in the same article more than once, use <ref name="Chicago 16th" /> for the subsequent citations.

{{Chicago 16th
 |p=
 |pp=
 |at=
 |title=
 |accessdate=
 |url=
}}

Parameters

The first three listed parameters are required.

{{Chicago 16th
 |p=page number or |pp=page numbers

 |at=section number – required
 |title=Section title – required – or do both, with colon, at once: |at=section number: Section title
 |url=location in online version – optional
}}

The numbered section of the CMoS must be added, with the |at= parameter, as it is the only way to find the material in the online version, which is not paginated like the print book.

Page numbering

See {{rp}} if a page number is needed in subsequent citations with the <ref name="Chicago 16th" /> notation.

Otherwise, simply add the page number(s) as the named |p= or |pp=.

The URL to the online version can be added manually, with the |url= parameter, but it will auto-generate a Template:Subscription required tag in the citation, since the online version is not free to access.

{{Chicago 16th|pp=671–673|at=14.38|title=Footnotes and endnotes – an overview}}

Example

Article text.<ref name="Chicago 16th">{{Chicago 16th|pp=671–673|at=14.38|title=Footnotes and endnotes – an overview}}</ref>
