This template allows the works of Flavius Josephus published in the Project on Ancient Cultural Engagement (PACE), the Perseus Project, and the Loeb Classical Library to be cited in one citation statement. It is essentially a wrapper for the {{PACEJ}}, {{LOEBJ}} and {{Perseus}} templates.

Sample template

{{cite Josephus| PACEJ = 1 | text= |bookno= |chap= |sec= |Perseus = 1 |1= |2= |3= }}

Parameters

Parameter Description
pace or PACEJ If citing PACE, use pace=1 or PACEJ=1, then add the parameters for {{PACEJ}}: text, bookno, chap, and sec. (see the documentation below).
per or Perseus If citing Perseus, use per=1 or Perseus=1, then add the parameters for {{Perseus}}: 1, 2, and 3. (see the documentation below).
link Use link=yes to add the wikilink "Josephus" in the beginning of the line.

Examples

  • PACE only
Wikitext
{{cite Josephus | PACEJ=1 | text=wars | bookno=6 | chap=9 | sec=3}}
Result
Template:PACEJ.

  • Perseus only, no wikilink
Wikitext
{{cite Josephus |Perseus=1 | 1=J. | 2=BJ | 3=6.9.3}}
Result
Template:Perseus,Template:Space.

  • Loeb only, no wikilink
Wikitext
{{cite Josephus | LOEBJ=1 | ants=6 | sec=3}}
Result
Loeb: 6.3.

  • PACE and Perseus, with wikilink
Wikitext
{{cite Josephus | PACEJ=1 | text=wars | bookno=6 | chap=9 | sec=3 |Perseus=1 | 1=J. | 2=BJ | 3=6.9.3}}
Result
Template:PACEJ,Template:SpaceTemplate:Perseus,Template:Space.

Numbering systems

There are two major systems for numbering the works of Josephus. William Whiston used Book, Chapter, and Paragraph numbers, whereas Benedikt Niese's system used in Loeb Classical Library uses Book and Section numbers. Sometimes Whiston's paragraph numbers are also referred to as section numbers.

Catholic Biblical Quarterly's guidelines on citing Josephus state: "A complete reference to Josephus should conclude with the paragraph number(s) in the Niese system, preceded by §: Josephus B.J. 2.8.13 §160; neither the Niese number alone (e.g., Josephus B.J. §160) nor the Niese number with partial omission of what should precede (e.g., Josephus B.J. 2.8 §160 or 2.8.160) is sufficient."[citation needed]
