There are currently 3 generations of AM4-based chipsets on the market. Models beginning with the number "3" are representatives of the first generation, with the number "4" — the second generation, etc.

Individual chipset models differ in comparison to each other, among others, in the number of PCI Express lanes, USB ports, SATA connectors, as well as supported technologies. The table below shows these differences.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.amd.com/en/products/chipsets-am4 |title=AMD Socket AM4 Platform |website=AMD |access-date=2019-06-10}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.amd.com/en/chipsets/x570 |title=Socket AM4 X570 Motherboards |website=AMD |access-date=2019-06-10}}</ref>
