Chocorua Island Chapel
- ... that Chocorua Island Chapel at Squam Lake, New Hampshire, began as part of the first summer youth camp in America, built out of boulders, trees and beach sand by the camp's boys? (182 characters)
Source:"Camp Chocorua, considered the first summer youth camp in the country" First, "the boys cleared the location for the chapel, opening up an area roughly thirty feet in diameter. They smoothed the ground out, removing most rocks and all vegetative material; according to one source, they even spread beach sand around to simulate a carpet. The clearing contained an erratic boulder that was upended for an altar and "surrounded by two stone steps." Behind the altar and close by the shoreline, the boys erected a ten-foot cross made of birch tree trunks. An oddly shaped piece of granite was "fished out of the lake" to serve as a lectern, which it vaguely resembled. For seating, they fashioned rustic benches from saplings" PP 17-18

Interesting (hi)story, on good sources, no copyvio obvious. The hook is ok, although I'd prefer one including the "erratic boulder" ;) - I dropped "young" from "young boys". --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:05, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
- ALT1 ... that the altar of the Chocorua Island Chapel in New Hampshire is an "erratic" boulder, and the lectern was found in Squam Lake?
