After the death of Boleslaw in 1138 his five sons to inherit the Polish throne. Boleslaw was wary of his own experiences with the possibility to civil war. Boleslaw decided to divide his kingdom between his five sons in an attempt to prevent division and civil war. The concept of primogeniture (inheritance by the eldest son) was gradulely being abolished by the Polish nobility. Boleslaw arranged for his eldest son to become the primary prince and his other fours sons would inherit part of the Polish kingdom. Although Boleslaw divised a very creatative solution it would add to the fragmentation of the country and Poland would be without a king for the next two hundred years.
