| This is a documentation subpage for Template:JPL. It contains usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page. |
Usage
This template creates an external link to the JPL Small-Body Database Browser (SBDB) for a specific small Solar System body such as an asteroid or a comet.
First parameter: identifier
The required first parameter is the body's unique identifier. Several identifiers are possible:
- For minor-planets
{{JPL|2436}}produces JPL, for numbered asteroid 2436 Hatshepsut{{JPL|2018+CN2}}produces JPL, for provisionally designated asteroid Template:Mpl (note the "+"-sign)
- For comets
{{JPL|17P}}produces JPL, for numbered comet 17P/Holmes (note without "/" and name){{JPL|P/2011+NO1}}produces JPL, for unnumbered comet P/2011 NO1 (note the "+"-sign)
- Using SPK-ID
- For special cases, use SBDB's interal reference key (spk-id). For example, comets with fragments (e.g. 205P/Giacobini, use
{{JPL|1000933}}(JPL) instead of{{JPL|205P}}(JPL) The spk-id is displayed in SBDB's title section.
Second parameter: label
The optional second parameter is used as a replacement for the wikilink text. The default is "JPL" as in all examples above. It may be changed to any given text. For example:
{{JPL|2436|(2436) Hatshepsut}}→ (2436) Hatshepsut{{JPL|17P|Comet Holmes}}→ Comet Holmes
- Close approach data
If the second parameter is named with |cad=, a link to the object's close approach data (cad) section is produced instead.
Example for the near-Earth object 99942 Apophis:
{{JPL|99942|cad=Close approaches of Apophis}}→ Close approaches of Apophis
