Until the season starts, the order of teams and the {{para|update }} and {{para|start_date}} parameters should not be changed. Once the season starts, remove the {{para|start_date}} parameter and set {{para|update}} to the appropriate date.

====During season====

After each match, update the table and ensure the order of teams and the {{para|update}} parameter are also updated. For example:

To change the order of the teams, set {{para|team1}} to the team in first place in the conference, {{para|team2}} to the team in second place, etc. The order of data entry does not need to be changed. The status of a team can also be set during the season if the outcome is known:

*If a team will definitely advance to the conference semi-finals, set {{para|status|A}}

*If a team will definitely finish sixth or better, set {{para|status|T}}

*If a team will definitely finish seventh or lower, set {{para|status|E}}

*Otherwise, set {{para|status}}

====After season complete====

When the season is complete, set {{para|update|complete}} and clear {{para|status}} for all teams.

Usage

This template is designed to collect information, which is used in several articles, in one location. The 2017 Major League Soccer season tables are shown on the overall season article, as well as the articles for each conference, if not other pages as well. This template should replace the need to update the same information on several articles.

In article

To add this table to an article, type {{2017 Major League Soccer Eastern Conference table}}.

Display options

Smaller table

If a smaller displayed table is desired, the parameter |only_pld_pts= can be defined in the template call to display only the position, team, games played, and points columns. This display may be desired if displaying both conference tables side-by-side. Valid values of |only_pld_pts= to display a truncated table are 1, yes, y, true, and t. For example:

What you type
{{2017 Major League Soccer Eastern Conference table|only_pld_pts=true}}
What you see
Pos Team Pld Pts
1 Toronto FC 34 69
2 New York City FC 34 57
3 Chicago Fire 34 55
4 Atlanta United FC 34 55
5 Columbus Crew 34 54
6 New York Red Bulls 34 50
7 New England Revolution 34 45
8 Philadelphia Union 34 42
9 Montreal Impact 34 39
10 Orlando City SC 34 39
11 D.C. United 34 32

Display on team articles

Smaller sections of the table can be placed in team articles |showteam= and |show_limit= parameters. Use the abbreviation for the team that is used in the code, e.g. DCU for D.C. United, and the number of teams you wish to display – note that even numbers will be increased to an odd number to show symmetry in the table. For example:

What you type
{{2017 Major League Soccer Eastern Conference table|showteam=DCU|show_limit=5}}
What you see
Pos Team Pld W L T GF GA GD Pts
7 New England Revolution 34 13 15 6 53 61 −8 45
8 Philadelphia Union 34 11 14 9 50 47 +3 42
9 Montreal Impact 34 11 17 6 52 58 −6 39
10 Orlando City SC 34 10 15 9 39 58 −19 39
11 D.C. United 34 9 20 5 31 60 −29 32
Source: MLS
Rules for classification: 1) points; 2) total wins; 3) total goal differential; 4) total goals scored; 5) disciplinary points; 6) away goal differential; 7) away goals scored ; 8) home goals scored; 9) home goal differential; 10) coin toss or drawing of lots.
