Template documentation[view] [edit] [history] [purge]

Purpose

This template facilitates the attribution of articles from editions of American Cyclopaedia that are in the public domain using the template {{Cite AmCyc}} which in turn calls {{Cite encyclopedia}}.

Usage

{{AmCyc|wstitle=''name of the American Cyclopaedia article here''}}

or with a specification of additional options:

{{AmCyc
 |noicon=''1'' — suppress the leading icon
 |inline=''1'' — changes the prescript and should be used when this template is used as an inline citation
 |short=''1'' — suppresses some of the fields such as editor's name
 |ref=''harv'' — can be overridden (if you need to ask you do not need to change it)
 |wstitle=''AmCyc article'' — if the article is available on Wikisource
 |display=''alternative name'' — displayed inplace of the wstitle name
 |title=''AmCyc article'' — if the article is not available on Wikisource

 |url= — will not be set unless the parameter ''title='' is set

 If not set, set in the template Cite AmCyc to default values
 |encyclopedia= —[[American Cyclopaedia]]
 |editor-first= —defaults to "''George Edwin''"
 |editor-last=  —defaults to "''Rines''"
 |{encyclopedia=
 |year — defaults to 1920

 If set pass in other standard parameters:
 |first=
 |first1=
 |first2=

 |last=
 |last1=
 |last2=

 |author=
 |author1=
 |author2=
 |authors=
 |authorlink=
 |coauthors=

 |volume=
 |page=
 |pages=
}}

Examples

Simple

{{AmCyc|wstitle=Cogniet, Leon}}

displays as:

This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domainRipley, George; Dana, Charles A., eds. (1879). "Cogniet, Leon" . The American Cyclopædia.

With comment

{{AmCyc|wstitle=Cogniet, Leon}} A French history and portrait painter with many famous students.

displays as:

Using last, first and authorlink

{{AmCyc|last=Cross |first=Wilbur L. |wstitle=David Copperfield}}

displays as:

This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domainCross, Wilbur L. (1879). "David Copperfield" . In Ripley, George; Dana, Charles A. (eds.). The American Cyclopædia.

{{AmCyc|last=Cross |first=Wilbur L. |authorlink=Wilbur L. Cross |wstitle=David Copperfield}}

displays as:

This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domainCross, Wilbur L. (1879). "David Copperfield" . In Ripley, George; Dana, Charles A. (eds.). The American Cyclopædia.

Using volume, pages, page

These work as with other {{cite}} templates:

{{AmCyc |title=Pulte, Joseph Hippolyt |volume=22 |page=799 }}

displays as:

File:PD-icon.svg This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domainRipley, George; Dana, Charles A., eds. (1879). "Pulte, Joseph Hippolyt". The American Cyclopædia. 22. p. 799.

Using display

The mechanics of Wikisource will sometimes require that a link have disambiguation information which is not part of the original title. The display parameter allows this information to be hidden for the purpose of the citation. For example:

{{AmCyc|wstitle=Monroe (Louisiana) |display=Monroe, La.}}

displays as:

This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domainRipley, George; Dana, Charles A., eds. (1879). "Monroe, La." . The American Cyclopædia.

Using noicon

{{AmCyc|wstitle=Cogniet, Leon|noicon=x}}

displays as:

This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domainRipley, George; Dana, Charles A., eds. (1879). "Cogniet, Leon". The American Cyclopædia.

Using title (no Wikisource link)

{{AmCyc |title=Sterne, Simon}}

displays as:

File:PD-icon.svg This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domainRipley, George; Dana, Charles A., eds. (1879). "Sterne, Simon". The American Cyclopædia.

When title is being used, url can be used to specify an external link. For example:

{{AmCyc
 |title=Sterne, Simon
 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=cr9PAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA632
}} At [[Google Books]].

displays as:

File:PD-icon.svg This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domainRipley, George; Dana, Charles A., eds. (1879). "Sterne, Simon". The American Cyclopædia. At Google Books.

Using short

If a shorter citation is desired, containing the editor of the 1920 edition, the long option can be used. For example:

{{AmCyc|wstitle=Schlatter, Michael|short=x}}

displays as:

This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domain"Schlatter, Michael" . The American Cyclopædia. 1879.

If another edition besides 1920 is being used, the editor name can be customized using editor-first and editor-last. If used, these two items will be displayed whether or not the long option is specified.

Hidden categories

This template places articles into a hidden category with sub-categories to aid maintenance:
