An article's importance assessment is generated from the importance parameter in the {{PROJECT_BANNER}} project banner on its talk page:

The following values may be used for the importance parameter to describe the relative importance of the article within the project:

Usage
This template will display information quality Importance. The template is generally used on the WikiProjects Importance page. The syntax is as follows:

Parameters
|banner=(required) - The name of the WikiProjects Banner.|topic=(required) - set so that the quality categories are: "Foo-Class topic articles".|extraparam=(optional) - Extra parameters to be passed over to the WikiProjects Banner. For example, the name of a taskforce.
