The '''Distinguished Eagle Scout Award''' (DESA) was established in the United States during 1969.  It may be awarded to those who have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout 25 or more years prior to their nomination, have gained status of fame or eminence in their life work, and have voluntarily shared their talents with their communities.

The award is granted by the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) upon selection by a committee of nationally prominent DESA honorees.  The award consists of a gold eagle medallion suspended from a red, white and blue neck ribbon.  The medallion is a gold version of the silver one that is a part of the Eagle Scout Award.

As of early 2006, fewer than 1,400 men had been awarded the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, while about 1.85 million Scouts had been presented the Eagle Scout Award.  This is about 1 in 1,300 of all Eagle Scouts.  Notable honorees include motion picture director Steven Spielberg, astronaut Neil Armstrong, former president Gerald Ford, businessmen Sam Walton and Ross Perot, financier John Whitehead, Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, General William Westmoreland, and Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, among others.
