This template provides a quick, standard method of citing Grove Music Online for music-related articles in Wikipedia.

It is a wrapper around the standard citation template {{cite encyclopedia}}. As such it fills out some {{cite encyclopedia}} parameters, but the full range of parameters provided by WP:CS1 are available. To change the appearance of the output to that of {{citation}} use the parameter |mode=cs2.

Usage

All parameters apart from |title= are strictly speaking optional:

{{cite Grove |title=Roméo et Juliette}}

Root, Deane L., ed. (2001). "Roméo et Juliette". The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Oxford University Press.

However, it is strongly encouraged to include at least |last1=, |first1=, |date=, |title=, and |url= (or |doi= or |id=).

If one of the link parameters (|url=, |doi= or |id=) is used the template displays the title Grove Music Online, 8th (ed). If no link parameter is provided it is assumed that the citation is based on the paper edition: the title is changed to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and editor is added. If this is the case then the parameter |page=number ought to be provided.

The syntax with typical parameters is as follows:

{{cite Grove
  |last1 = Huebner
  |first1 = Steven
  |date = 2002
  |title = Roméo et Juliette
  |url=https://doi.org/10.1093/gmo/9781561592630.article.O006772
  |url-access=subscription
  }}

Huebner, Steven (2002). "Roméo et Juliette". Grove Music Online (8th ed.). Oxford University Press.

Example of a free-access page, with two authors, each of which has a Wikipedia article:

{{Cite Grove
  |last1 = Wolff
  |first1 = Christoph
  |author-link1 = Christoph Wolff
  |last2 = Emery
  |first2 = Walter
  |author-link2 = Walter Emery
  |date = 20 January 2001
  |title = Bach, Johann Sebastian
  |url = https://doi.org/10.1093/gmo/9781561592630.article.6002278195
  }}

Wolff, Christoph; Emery, Walter (20 January 2001). "Bach, Johann Sebastian". Grove Music Online (8th ed.). Oxford University Press.

As an alternative to |url=, either |doi= or |id= can be used (|id= should contain the end part of the doi—after the last decimal point).

{{cite Grove
  |last1 = Huebner
  |first1 = Steven
  |year = 2002
  |title = Roméo et Juliette
  |doi = 10.1093/gmo/9781561592630.article.O006772
  }}

Huebner, Steven (2002). "Roméo et Juliette". Grove Music Online (8th ed.). Oxford University Press. doi:10.1093/gmo/9781561592630.article.O006772.

{{cite Grove
  |author = Huebner, Steven
  |date = 2002
  |title = Roméo et Juliette
  |id = O006772
  }}

Huebner, Steven (2002). "Roméo et Juliette". Grove Music Online (8th ed.). Oxford University Press. doi:10.1093/gmo/9781561592630.article.O006772.

It is however discouraged, as in the last example, to use the |author= parameter when both last name and given name(s) are known: use |last1= and |first1= instead
