| This is a documentation subpage for Template:Cite OED. It contains usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page. |
| This template is a Citation Style 1 wrapper template based on {{Citation}}. For centralised Citation Style 1 discussions, see Help talk:Citation Style 1. |
The Cite OED template generates a citation and online reference for a particular word defined in the third edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. No support for volume or page is included; they are inappropriate for an online citation.
Usage
If used within an inline footnote, the footnote should be inserted after punctuation, such as a period or comma.
In its simplest form: {{Cite OED|term}} – where term is a word or a term used in the OED
To avoid ambiguity with words that may have multiple definitions (for example, "get" has 3 distinct definitions as a noun and one as a verb in the OED), the OED ID included in the URL of the page may be cited; http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/144742 has ID 144742. However, citing the ID may prevent jumping to the location of a compound term; for example {{Cite OED|pith helmet|id=144742}} will link to the top of the "pith" page,[1] while {{Cite OED|pith helmet}} will link, more usefully, to "pith helmet" on that page.[2] Template:Reflist-talk
