Parameters
Parameters are optional except where noted
- litigants
- Required. List of litigants, often shortened, as in "Miranda v. Arizona". If a Wikipedia article using this exact string exists, a link will automatically be created. Alternately, if an article exists but another name is desired for display, a wikilink may be specified, e.g.:
[[Case article|This v. That]]. Note: The standard in legal case citations is "v.", not "vs." or "versus". - vol
- Volume of the reporter (law report book). Must not be individually linked (will be spanned by the URL provided in the
urlparameter). - reporter
- The standard abbreviation for whatever reporter is being referenced; i.e., "U.S." for the U.S. Supreme Court's "United States Reports". Must not be individually linked (will be spanned by the URL provided in the
urlparameter). - opinion
- The opinion number, often the page number for the case. Must not be individually linked (will be spanned by the URL provided in the
urlparameter). - pinpoint
- Identifies a citation pinpoint, a specific part of a decision, typically by page or paragraph number. May be given as an external link (e.g.
|opinion=[http://www.example.com/path/file#anchor 170]) if it is more specific than the link to the main case page given with theurlparameter. - court
- The standard abbreviation for the court being cited (e.g. "3d Cir." or "M.D. Ala."; see here for other courts in the United States). In order for the value of
courtto appear, thedateparameter must also be filled. Note: This parameter also should likely not be optional. - date
- The year or full date in which the court rendered its decision.
- url
- A webpage with the full text, or at least a detailed abstract, of the case. For example, for a U.S. Supreme Court case, the URL at FindLaw will be of the form:
http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?navby=CASE&court=US&vol=volume&page=page
If a paywall would block most readers' access to it, this should be noted with{{Subscription required}}after the{{Cite court}}template and before the</ref>. - access-date
- The date that you verified the source, not the date of the case.
