This graduate-level course offers an introduction to the discipline of American Studies through a close reading of four texts, several films, and critical articles and chapters representing different approaches within the discipline. We will focus on the issues of identity, race, and shared spaces in North America. The goal of the course is to familiarize students with dynamic approaches to interpreting American history, literature, and art through active seminar discussions, film viewings, fieldtrips to commemorative sites, and four distinct written assignments.

Course description

This graduate-level course offers an introduction to the discipline of American Studies through a close reading of four texts, several films, and critical articles and chapters representing different approaches within the discipline.
