At-a-glance instructions on how to promote an approved hook to a Prep area
Nominations may only be promoted by uninvolved parties who were neither the article creator, nor the nominator or reviewer.

  • Select a hook from the nominations page that has one of these ticks as the bottom post: 16px 16px.
1) Check to make sure basic review requirements were completed.
a. Any outstanding issue following 16px 16px needs to be addressed before promoting.
2) Images must be freely licensed/Fair-use images are not permitted. DYK lead hook images are automatically protected on Commons.
3) Hook must be stated in both the article and source (which must be cited at the end of the article sentence where stated).
4) Hook should make sense grammatically.
5) Try to vary subject matters within each prep area.
6) Quirky hook is the bottom hook.
  • Open the Prep area where you intend to add the hook.
1) For hooks held for specific dates, refer to "Local update times" section on DYK Queue.
a. Completed Prep area number sets will be promoted by an administrator to corresponding Queue number.
2) Copy and paste the hook into a chosen slot.
a. The hook should always have a space between "..." and "that", should end in a "?"
b. The hook should have a bold link to the article.
3) If it's the lead (first) hook, paste the image where indicated at the top of the template.
4) Copy and paste the credit information (the {{DYKmake}} and {{DYKnom}} templates) at the bottom.
a. The same editor should not get both a DYKmake and a DYKnom for the same article; omit the DYKnom in that case
b. Check the DYKmake entries in Preview mode
1. At the bottom under "Credits" to the right of the article should have the link "View nom subpage" ; it not, a subpage parameter will need to be added to the DYKmake.
5) Save the page.
  • In the DYK nomination template
1) In the upper left hand side, replace the line {{DYKsubpage with {{subst:DYKsubpage
2) In the upper left hand side, replace |passed= with |passed=yes
3) Check in Preview mode - if it was done correctly, everything will be against a pale blue background. There should be no stray characters (like }} ) at the top or bottom, and no text outside the blue background.
4) Edit summary should indicate which Prep area you have promoted the hook to.
5) Save.
