| − | STOP! BEFORE YOU ADD A NEW ITEM, PLEASE READ THESE NOTES:
| |
| − | | |
| − | *This is NOT a general trivia section.
| |
| − | *This section is only for items that have been listed on "NEW PAGES" in the last 120 hours
| |
| − | *The title of the new article should be '''BOLD''' and placed on TOP as the FIRST ITEM.
| |
| − | *Generally limited to eight items, but whatever the case – just make sure it fits whatever else is on the page at that time. Use your common sense.
| |
| − | *NO STUBS (moreover, try to find new articles that are 1,500+ bytes in size)
| |
| − | *Try to pick articles that are ORIGINAL to Wikipedia (not 1911 or other data sources) and that are INTERESTING.
| |
| − | *The "Did you know?" fact must be mentioned in the article.
| |
| − | *Images should be sized to 100px or SMALLER.
| |
| − | *Do not use fair-use images. Instead, find a related free image (PD, GFDL, CC etc.) as an alternative.

If you replace or remove an item from the above template before it appears on the Main Page, make sure to re-add the hook to [[Template talk:Did you know]] at the '''correct date of creation/expansion''' (find it in the history) along with credits, and preferably add a note explaining why you did so.

| − | ===Credit templates===
| |
| − | You can also give out credits using the following templates:
| |
| − | *'''Article talk page:''' ''({{tl|dyktalk}})'' <tt><nowiki>{{dyktalk|</nowiki>{{CURRENTDAY}} {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}}|{{CURRENTYEAR}}<nowiki>}}</nowiki></tt> (check if small style templates in use, if so add small=yes parm)

| |
| − | *'''Notify contributor about addition to a [[Wikipedia:Portals|Portal]]:''' (can be modified for more than one portal) – ''({{tl|UpdatedDYKportal}})'' <tt><nowiki>{{subst:UpdatedDYKportal|Article name|Portal:Portal name}} --~~~~</nowiki></tt>
| |
| − | | |
| − | :Note that portal notifications are only done if you have taken the trouble to add the DYK hook to a relevant portal, which is entirely optional. The other notifications must be done before the preparation area page can be reset.
| |
| − | | |
| − | ==Images==
| |
| − | *Don't forget to add an ''<nowiki>{{mprotected}}</nowiki>'' notice to the image description page (or ''<nowiki>{{C-uploaded}}</nowiki>'' '''plus''' a copy of the author attribution and the licence tag if you have uploaded a temporary copy from Commons).
| |
| − | | |
| − | ==Posting the new update==
| |
| − | *''Note: This is the manual method. When using [[User:DYKUpdateBot|DYKUpdateBot]], the bot should automate all of the following except steps 1 and 10.''
| |
| − | | |
| − | # Make sure the image/media for the [[Template:Did you know/Queue/{{Template:Did you know/Queue/Next}}|hooks to be loaded]] is on English Wikipedia or protected on Commons. If the image/file is on Commons and not protected, upload it to En and tag it with {{tl|c-uploaded}}. You do not need to protect the picture; this is done automatically because of the [[WP:Cascading protection|cascading protection]] of the Main Page. Alternatively, if you are an admin at Commons you can protect the image/file at Commons instead of uploading to En.
| |
| − | # Update [[T:DYK]] from [[Template:Did you know/Queue/{{Template:Did you know/Queue/Next}}|the current queue]].
| |
| − | # [{{fullurl:Main Page|action=purge}} Purge the cache of the Main Page] to make sure the new entries appear.
| |
| − | # [{{fullurl:Template:Did_you_know/Time|action=edit}} Reset] the [[Template:Did_you_know/Time|DYK time]].
| |
| − | # Increment the [[Template:Did you know/Queue/Next|next queue count]].
| |
| − | # Copy the [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Did_you_know&action=history ''previous'' set of hooks] (''not'' the new set just promoted to the front page) to [[Wikipedia:Recent additions|the archive]]. Be sure to copy the final revision of the set (should be the last diff on the [[T:DYK]] page before your update). Please include the picture/file.
| |
| − | # Check if the previous picture/file was temporarily uploaded from Commons for display on the Main Page, and delete it from En if so.
| |
| − | # If you have time, please do the credits for the hooks just promoted (see "Credits" section above).
| |
| − | # Clear the queue you just promoted hooks from with {{tlu|User:DYKUpdateBot/REMOVE THIS LINE}}.
| |
| − | # If you have time, check if [[T:DYK/P1|Preparation area 1]] or [[T:DYK/P2|Preparation area 2]] are full. Check the hooks for errors, and promote them to the next empty numbered queue if they're good. Clear the queue you took hooks from to look like [[Template:Did you know/Clear|this]]. Tag the numbered queue with <nowiki>{{</nowiki>[[Template:DYKbotdo|DYKbotdo]]<nowiki>|~~~}}</nowiki> once the queue is loaded and ready.
