Eastern salient of Java

  • ... that the ruling Dutch East India Company drove the Islamization of the eastern salient of Java in the eighteenth century?
Source: "It is one of the curiosities of VOC history that in the Eastern Salient, where it faced the threat of Hindu Balinese intervention, the VOC encouraged the spread of Islam, which elsewhere in Indonesia it greatly feared" (Ricklefs p.123) and "Consequently, the Company became a driving force in Islamizing the people of Blambangan and simultaneously in the concomitant steady erosion of Hindu-Balinese beliefs and culture." (Margana pp. 240-241)"
