Karl G. Maeser

  • ... that Karl G. Maeser, one of the founders of Brigham Young University, adopted Pestalozzian ideals and supported teaching students with love and respect? Source:Called to Teach, a recent biography of Maeser, goes into great detail of Pestalozzi's influence on Maeser. The page I cited specifically recounts a time when Maeser taught future teachers to teach children geography through illustrations of continents, rivers, and such. The author states that Maeser was teaching them Pestalozzian ideas. There's also a footnote on page 72 saying that Maeser practiced Pestalozzian teaching based on what his students said about his interactions with them.
    • ALT1:... that Karl G. Maeser, one of the founders of Brigham Young University, was briefly an organist for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir? Source: "Maeser presided over the German-speaking congregations in the city, organized schools in the 15th and 20th wards, and, for a time, served as assistant organist for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir." from a Deseret News article
    • ALT2:... that after Karl G. Maeser tutored Brigham Young's fifty-six children, he went on to help found Brigham Young University? Source: Master's of History thesis; this information is also found in the Called to Teach book.
    • ALT3:... that Karl G. Maeser, one of the founders of Brigham Young University, gave music lessons to former U.S. president John Tyler's daughters? Source: two different books; the most recent is a 2007 book published by Covenant Communications about Mormon prophets and U.S. presidents. I can get the exact quote if you'd like.
