The hook is referenced to an offline source and I do not like to accept it in good faith because on the face of it, it seems an unlikely statement ("the first winners of an open tennis event"). How about this alternative hook? This article is new enough and long enough. I do not believe you need to do a QPQ as you appear to have fewer than 5 previous DYKs. The hook is referenced to an offline source and I do not like to accept it in good faith because on the face of it, it seems an unlikely statement ("the first winners of an open tennis event"). How about this alternative hook? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 07:00, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
- ALT1 ... that Nell Truman and her sister Christine clinched the 1968 Wightman Cup by winning the final match?
This Sports Illustrated article available online confirms the 1968 British Hard Court Championships as the first tournament of the Open Era. The women's doubles final was held on the Friday (26 April), and the finals of the other events (men's and women's singles, mixed and men's doubles, and plate competitions) were played at the weekend (information from contemporary newspapers, can't do URLs as access is via a library subscription). So Ms Truman and her sister were the first winners of an open tennis event, albeit because their event was the first of the various finals to be played. Was new enough when nominated, long enough, sourced, etc, etc. Appears to be nominator's 4th DYK, so no QPQ required. ALT1 is good to go
, but personally I prefer the original, even if it's a little long-winded; could always trim a little by removing "in April 1968" and instead linking explicitly to 1968 British Hard Court Championships. Have taken the liberty of wikilinking "Christine". cheers, Struway2 (talk) 12:11, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
