Usage

This is a navigation template to be placed on articles about United States diplomatic missions. The purpose of navigation templates is to provide links between existing articles. Therefore this template only displays links to existing articles about US diplomatic missions, which represents only a small portion of US diplomatic missions.

Formatting

Embassies are shown in bold, Consulate-Generals are shown in italics, and † denotes American Presence Posts. Missions to organizations, plus the Vatican, are followed by the name of the city in which they are located, eg. "African Union (Addis Ababa)". Former diplomatic missions are followed by the years they were open, eg. "Tehran (1951-79)".

New articles

This template contains a list of all US diplomatic missions (as of May 2014). Listings for which there is not currently a Wikipedia article have been hidden using the following code:

<!-- text -->

For example, the following is in the template code but does not show:

<!-- *Abidjan -->

If the article for the Abidjan embassy is created, simply remove the bold part of the following:

<!-- * Abidjan -->

The following line of code in the template will thus display a link to the Abidjan embassy article as Abidjan (in blue):

* Abidjan

Former missions

The following former missions are relatively noteworthy and should be considered for creation:

Initial visibility: currently defaults to autocollapse

To set this template's initial visibility, the |state= parameter may be used:

  • |state=collapsed: to show the template collapsed, i.e., hidden apart from its title bar
  • |state=expanded: to show the template expanded, i.e., fully visible
  • |state=autocollapse:
    • shows the template collapsed to the title bar if there is a navbar, a sidebar, or some other table on the page with the collapsible attribute
    • shows the template in its expanded state if there are no other collapsible items on the page

If the |state= parameter in the template on this page is not set, the template's initial visibility is taken from the |default= parameter in the Collapsible option template. For the template on this page, that currently evaluates to autocollapse.
