We're Different, We're the Same (Sesame Street).

Were different, We're the same is a 123 Sesame Street Book written by Bobbi Jane Kates and illustrated by Joe Mathieu. The colorful characters from Sesame Street teach young children about racial harmony. Muppets, monsters, and humans compare noses, hair, and skin and realize how different we all are. But as they look further, they also discover how much we are alike.

Plot

The book begins with highlighting, first, the fact that we’re all different. After all, we have different kinds of noses. But, guess what, we’re all the same because, even though our noses may be different, we all use our noses to do the same kinds of things like breathe, sniff, sneeze, and whiff.

Next comes the fact that our hair is different. The images show how everyone, from characters on Sesame Street to regular people, all have different hair. Our hair may be different but it is also the same because all of our hair, no matter the type or style or color, grows in several places, warms our heads, and frames our faces. And then mouths, skin, eyes, bodies, and feelings, are all explained in terms of them being different for all of us and yet the same in so many, many ways.

The book concluded with words:

"We’re the same. We’re different.

That’s what makes the world such fun!

A rainbow would be boring if it were only green or blue.

What makes a rainbow beautiful is that it has every hue.

So aren’t you glad you look like you?"

Anti-racism

Sesame Street has been teaching kids that diversity is beautiful for over 50 years, so it'll come as no surprise that the favorite muppets star in this great book about racism for kids. Elmo and his friends show that even though people might look different on the outside, on the inside everyone have the same needs, feelings and desires.

This book teach the children about their characteristics and also what they do. This is providing them with self knowledge. It includes different cultures physical attributes in the illustrations trying to deconstruct negative stereotypes. It teaches that it is okay to be different. You are wonderful just the way you are and that's what makes the world so special. The students may gain acceptance and self esteem towards themselves after reading these encouraging words from the friendly Sesame Street friends.
