This is a hyphen (-). It has the same function as the code <code>&amp;#45;</code> or the symbol -. It comes in handy when an editor wishes to make explicit that he or she really does intend a hyphen, so that other editors will, perhaps, think twice before mindlessly changing to ndash or whatever. Also, by allowing <code>{{t|hyphen}}</code> to be coded instead of  <code>&amp;#45;</code>, it avoids the wrath of people who think html escapes are some kind of abomination. (There does not seem to be a symbolic escape e.g. <code>&amp;hyphen;</code>, as far as I can tell.)
