Base Butter is a skincare company founded by Neil Johnson as CEO & Co-founder and Nicolette Graves as VP of Product and Co-founder.[1]
Founder She’Neil Johnson dreamed up Base Butter to serve women of color who care about products made of pure, simple, and good-for-you ingredients. Since the brand's inception in 2015, Base Butter has exploded, and now carries the number-one aloe vera gel–based moisturizer for pH-balanced and hydrated skin.[2]
Support to Black Lives Matter
On June 2020 after the unjust murder of George Floyd, Base Butter has shifted its focus to be of service to those in need of support as they stand on the frontlines to take a stand. “Our mission is to help make skincare easy while our purpose is to help women, especially Black women, protect and feel comfortable in their skin. It’s a mission built on the historical context of being oppressed due to the color of our skin. It’s a mission focused on strengthening how we view ourselves within the skin we’re in. It’s because of this, that we’re taking some time to rally with allies to help move the needle by protecting the Black lives of those on the frontlines and bringing comfort to those who need it most.”[3]
On their website page, they announced that Base Butter is committed to the fight through a two prong approach:
- To “protect our skin” Base Butter donating 10% of all profits each month (until further notice) to an organization that is doing critical work to dismantle systemic racism. One June 2020, they are donating to the Loveland Foundation. The Loveland Foundation brings opportunity and healing to communities of color, especially to Black women and girls. Through fellowships, residency programs, listening tours, and more, ultimately they hope to contribute to both the empowerment and the liberation of the communities they serve.
- To help us “feel comfortable in our skin” Base Butter is partnering with JOYDAY to launch Finding Yellow, a therapist-led workshop series structured to create a place for Black people to heal and find joy — more details to come on this initiative in the upcoming weeks. JOYDAY is a digital movement focused on helping people find their inner joy through vulnerable conversations associated with mental health and wellness.[4]
