Usage
This template mirrors the one on German Wikipedia called Vorlage:Höhe for interpreting height data based on a range of systems. It is currently being used on English Wikipedia to assist translation of hundreds of railway line templates that record the height of points along the line.
The template contains world-wide datum information and could be used for any topographical purpose, to show heights above and below a particular datum. However, at present it will only translate Normal-Null data, the rest would appear in German.
Format
An example of the basic format is: {{Höhe|611|DE-NN|link=true}}, which results in the statement '611 m above sea level (NN)'.
If the parameter 'link' is set to 'true' it produces an automatic link to the definition of (in this case) NN or 'Normal-Null', roughly the equivalent of 'mean sea level' used in Germany and other parts of Europe.
Possible Wider Usage
I am willing to create a separate, fully-translated version of the template for world-wide, general topographical use, called something like 'Template:Height (topographical)' or 'Template:Height (terrain)', but only if it will be used as it would be a fair bit of work. --Bermicourt (talk) 21:33, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
