Historically this template, {{Inconsistent citations}}, and the associated category were created to support a function of User:Citation bot. Citation bot no longer applies this template. Editors in recent years have applied this template as a maintenance tag on an article and as an indicator on specific citations. There is no consensus on use of this template today. There is a conversation on the matter here: Help talk:Citation Style 1/Archive 67#Inconsistent citation, Articles with inconsistent citation formats, and a historical function of Citation Bot, and this usage has largely stopped.
