Parameter notes
Common elements
- Most of the parameters are designed only to show in the infobox if something is entered. They can be left in the template and empty if the item does not pertain to the article or if the information is not known at the time the template is added.
- The name field is an exception. If left empty, the infobox will not show a title. If the title is the same as the title of the article, name can either be deleted or commented out. The later is preferable since the name of the article, or the preferred name in the infobox may change.
- For multiple items in one field, separate each with <br />.
- Example: creators=Stan Lee<br />Jack Kirby
- Placing images uses 4 parameters: image, imagesize, imagealt and caption.
- image is just the filename of the image. Example: image=example.jpg
- imagesize is the width of the image. Use number imagesize=200 or upright=1.1 (default: 250).
- If image is too tall, reduce size below 250.
- The maximum width number is 250; for larger, use imagesize=upright=1.20 or such. Use upright=0.95 for 95% of each user's default image size.
- imagealt describes the image alt-text. Example: for Superman, imagealt=Drawing of man in blue bodysuit with chestplate of red "S" stretched across yellow triangle.
- caption appears below the image. Keep it short, but indicate the original published source of the image and artist(s).
Example: A comic book issue would have "caption=' 'Wolverine' ' vol 2, #17. Art by John Byrne".
- debut, is the issue of first appearance of the group. Example: Fantastic Four #3.
- debutmo and debutyr can be used along with debut. When this is done: debut is only the title, volume and issue number; debutmo is the month, season or week of the issue's cover date. This field is optional if no month is shown.
- debutyr is the four-digit year in the cover date. This links the year to the related "Year in comics" article. If omitted, only text in debut=xx will display.
- For multiple versions of the organization, multiple "First appearances" may be indicated. Use the following:
- debuthead to add a note above the debut as to which version it is.
- debut#, debutmo#, debutyr#, and debuthead# should be added for the additional debuts. Replace "#" with number 1, 2 or 3 (allows 3 more debuts: debut1, debut2, debut3).
Specific elements
- creators should list the creators of the team or group, not the individual members.
- type is the type of organization or business. Examples include: type=newspaper, type=manufacturing, or computer software, government agency, law firm, etc. For teams of adventures, superheroes, and supervillains, leave this field blank.
- The infobox uses a set of mutually exclusive logical fields to determine how to display type. These fields are:
- business - This will also have the character lists present as "Owner(s)" and "Employee(s)"
- organisation (or "organization") - This will also have the character lists present as "Leader(s)" and "Agent(s)". **team - If type is left blank, this option should be selected so that the infobox properly shows "Leader(s)".
- owners is the list of individual owners (business) or leaders (organizations and teams) of the group. This should be limited to notable characters. For teams, if there is no clear leader, or if it is a rotating title, this field can be left blank in favor of members.
- employees is the list of other notable characters associated with the business as employees or the organization as agents. For teams and organizations where "agent" is not appropriate, please use members
- For groups that have a list of members as either a subsection of the article or as a separate list article, use fullroster to link to there. In these cases restrict owners, employees, and members to key, or core characters, if the fields are used at all.
- base should list a group's most significant bases, including the current one (where applicable). Limit this to three at most, however.
Categories
This infobox has been designed to automatically place articles its added to into appropriate categories under Category:Fictional organizations (Note: Category:Fictional newspapers lists under Category:Fictional media). To do this the following parameters are used.
- cat is used for cases where the primary category is a specific type of organization. Due to the limitations of the template, the entry for this parameter cannot be capitalized.
- subcat can be used to enter a comics publisher. In cases where cat=teams is set, subcat places the category into the "<Publisher> teams". In all other cases, if subcat is set to either "DC Comics" or "Marvel Comics", the appropriate organizations category will be added; all other publishers will be ignored. Please review the subcategories to make sure a particular combination of cat and subcat exists.
- altcat is used for cases where the of the appropriate category does not end in a particular organization type.
- Note: subcat and altcat are mutually exclusive. If both are left empty, the article will be linked into "Category:Fictional organizations" by default.
- hero and villain are mutually exclusive logical functions. If one is set, cat and subcat will place the article into the proper "superhero" or "supervillains" subcategory instead of "teams".
- sortkey is the title by which the article will be sorted in the categories placed by the template. This sorting will default to {{PAGENAME}} and will override {{DEFAULTSORT}} listings in the article. Due to markup limitations, this parameter will not recognize a leading space.
