| This is a documentation subpage for Template:Infobox musical. It contains usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page. |
This infobox should italicize the article title automatically. If this is not required, add |italic title=no to the list of parameters. If this is required but the title is not being italicized, try |italic title=force. |

Parameters
The purpose of this list is to set more detailed guidelines for the content of the Infobox Musical template. The purpose of detailing the template is to further Wikipedia:WikiProject Musicals's goal of standardizing Wikipedia's musical theatre articles. Please leave feedback on the talk page.
- name
- The title of the musical
- subtitle
- Usually, "The Musical" or similar language.
- image
- Acceptable images may include:
- Promotional posters
- CD covers
- Playbill covers
- Logos
- Note: If no image is present, the page is added to Category:Musical theatre articles missing an image in infobox
- image_size
- Use to reduce the image to a size, generally between 150px and 260px, that keeps it from becoming distorted. To use actual size of the stored image, put: image_size=0 (default: 215px). Allows alias spelling as keyword "imagesize". NOTE - this parameter is REQUIRED for the image to display correctly
- caption
- Explanation of image. Please be brief ("Original Cast Recording" or "Logo"...); however, for fair-use images, include production date/name or for attribution, state name of artist(s).
- music
- The composer. Several composers should be separated using Plainlist. Should the music be credited as an adaptation, the original composer should be listed first, a line break, a bolded (triple-apostrophe) heading with the words " ' ' ' Adapted by: ' ' ' ", another line-break, and the adapters.
- lyrics
- The name of the lyricist, with caveats as for the music field.
- book
- The name of the book-writer, with caveats as above.
- basis
- This section should be included if the musical was based either directly or indirectly on another source.
- Include:
- Type of source of original (novel, play, movie, opera, etc.)
- Name of original work
- Author/composer of original work
- Example:
basis = Opera La boheme - setting
- The places and time where the musical takes place.
- premiere_date
- Date of the official premiere. use Start date
- premiere_location
- Venue or city of the premiere
- productions
- A list of productions, listed chronologically.
- Broadway (or off-Broadway) & West End productions
- Notable professional tours
- Notable professional revivals
- Notable professional international productions & tours
- Notable professional concerts & special performances
- No amateur productions (i.e. High school, community theater group productions, etc.)
- Previews may be discussed under the History/Background section of the article.
- For each production, include:
- Start year only
- Location
- For non-touring productions, write "Broadway", "West End", or the city and country of production.
- For tours, write the country of the tour
- Type of production (tour, concert etc.) for anything other than a fully-staged, non-touring production.
- Example:
productions =
- awards
-
- These awards should exclude production-specific awards (i.e., lighting, direction, scenery, acting awards).
- Include year of award. The year is listed before the award in each line.
- Example:
awards=1996 Tony Award for Best Book - Awards to be included:
- boxwidth
- The width of the infobox (default: 22em).
Controlling line-breaking in embedded bulletless lists
Template nbsp may be used with wbr and nowrap to control line-breaking in bulletless lists embedded in the infobox (e.g. a plainlist in the |book= parameter), to prevent wrapped long entries from being confused with multiple entries. See Template:Wbr/doc#Controlling line-breaking in infoboxes for details.
