Geological timescale template

Usage

Use the format {{Ma|Years_ago|Suffix}} or {{mya|Years_ago|Suffix}}.

Years_ago can take a number, or a period name, in which case it will return the date the period started

Suffix is optional and defaults to "million years ago". If a suffix is provided, it will be linked to mya (unit)

Examples

  • {{mya|65|mya}}
gives

65 mya

  • {{mya|Cambrian|MA}}
gives

Template:Mya

  • {{Ma|250}}
gives

250 million years ago

Rationale

With geological time, it is often genuinely useful for the lay reader, with little grasp of how long ago 500 million years really is, to be able to quickly flick to a timescale.

Hence, this template allows an easy way to implement such links.
