This is a Malay name; the name "{{{2}}}" is a patronymic, not a family name, and the person should be referred to by his or her given name, "{{{1}}}". The Malay word bin (b.) or binte (bte.), if used, means "son of" or "daughter of" respectively.

Syntax

{{Malay name|[given name]|[patronymic]|note=on (optional)}}

Usage

This template is a hatnote that can be put at the top of a biographical article to explain to readers that the second element of a Malay name is not the family name but a patronymic, that is, the given name of the subject's father. The parameters that the template takes are listed below:

Parameter Description
[given name] Replace this term with the person's given or personal name(s).
[patronymic] Replace this term with the person's patronymic, or father's name.
note Optional: if "note=on", the following explanatory note is displayed: "The Arabic word bin (b.) or binti/binte (bt./bte.), if used, means 'son of' or 'daughter of' respectively." These abbreviations are often used by Malays in Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore. If "note=off" or the "note" parameter is omitted, the explanatory note is not displayed.
