Tiebreakers[lower-alpha 5]
  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 MULTI-TEAM TIE: Arizona and Green Bay each defeated Philadelphia head-to-head (Arizona: Week 8, 24–20; Green Bay: Week 11, 53–20). Arizona is then ranked ahead of Green Bay for the No. 1 seed based on conference record.
  2. 2.0 2.1 2.2 2.3 MULTI-TEAM TIE: Ties within divisions are broken first. Atlanta is ranked ahead of New Orleans in the NFC South based on head-to-head victory (Week 1, 37–34). New Orleans is then ranked ahead of Minnesota based on head-to-head victory (Week 3, 20–9), and New Orleans is ahead of St. Louis based on conference record.
  3. 3.0 3.1 3.2 MULTI-TEAM TIE: Seattle and Detroit have better conference records than Dallas. Seattle is then ranked ahead of Detroit for the No. 5 seed based on record vs. common opponents (4–0 to 2–2).
  4. The Giants defeated Washington head-to-head (Week 3, 45–14).
  5. When breaking ties for three or more teams under the NFL's rules, they are first broken within divisions, then comparing only the highest ranked remaining team from each division.

Usage

This is a template that was created to easily update every article with the 2014 NFC standings.

The teams should be sorted according to the NFL tiebreaking rules, as indicated by such reliable sources as CBS Sports' playoff picture page* (the conference standings page on NFL.com are usually not accurate on this issue because they normally do not sort them by ALL the tiebreaking rules until the end of the season).

Because of the complexities of the tiebreaking rules, anything that is not verifiable may be reverted on grounds of original research. The footnotes listing the tiebreakers are currently displayed using the "lower-alpha" predefined footnote group (see WP:EXPLNOTE).

To use the update on any article, insert:

{{2014 NFC standings}}

To highlight the Seattle Seahawks, insert:

{{2014 NFC standings|team=SEA}}

The following are the codes for the teams in the NFC:

  • ARI - Arizona Cardinals
  • ATL - Atlanta Falcons
  • CAR - Carolina Panthers
  • CHI - Chicago Bears
  • DET - Detroit Lions
  • DAL - Dallas Cowboys
  • DET - Detroit Lions
  • GB - Green Bay Packers
  • NO - New Orleans Saints
  • NYG - New York Giants
  • PHI - Philadelphia Eagles
  • STL - St. Louis Rams
  • SF - San Francisco 49ers
  • SEA - Seattle Seahawks
  • TB - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • WAS - Washington Redskins
