Mahfouz continues to be an active volunteer in his community and is determined to improve the quality of life amongst his peers. Hence, Mahfouz is the main organizer of a Thanksgiving Dinner for the less fortunate in Ottawa held annually at Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School. In his more than 20 years of service with his school board, Ed Mahfouz stunningly kept a perfect attendance record. He is a published author and university graduate, earning a masters in Education from the University of Ottawa. Ed Mahfouz believes in an inclusive and just Canada: a Canada that he can be proud of whether I am at home or traveling abroad, a Canada that puts the rights of its citizens first, ahead of political partisanship. A richer, greener and fairer Canada. He believes in restoring those things we hold dear: our water, air, food quality, the state of our health care system, adequate funding of our schools, colleges and university, and our legal system. He believes in the good judgement of residents of Nepean-Carleton to address and find efficient solutions to roads and transportation problems. He believes that the federal government can play a positive role in people’s lives, and that a new trust needs to be forged between our community and its representative. When first becoming active in politics, Mahfouz was a Progressive Conservative, a “red Tory." However, it became painfully clear that the party to which he belonged and supported no longer represented his beliefs and no longer spoke to the issues that mattered. The Progressive Conservative Party was hijacked by the Reform Alliance Party, and the Red Tory element was no longer welcomed. Mahfouz therefore decided to support the party that welcomed those Red Tory ideals: fiscal prudence and social liberalism. He joined his family in the Liberal Party of Canada. Ed is part of a party that celebrates the rich mosaic of culturally and geographically different regions that make up this glorious thing we call Canada. That party is the Liberal Party of Canada and he is proud to be part of it. Mahfouz is facing off against Pierre Poilievre, current Conservative MP for Nepean-Carleton, noted for being an “attack dog” of the Stephen Harper government. Poilievre is best known for attacks on the transsexual and Aboriginal communities. Poilievre was ordered by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to apologize for his “racist” remarks on native peoples, as Poilievre had claimed falsehood as fact in saying that compensation being provided to residential school victims was $4 billion (it was in fact $1.9 billion) and said that Aboriginals instead need to learn “the values of hard work.” Prime Minister Stephen Harper was reported to have been furious with Poilievre over the diatribe, which also angered his Conservative colleagues in caucus. In contrast to the angry, partisan style of Poilievre, Ed Mahfouz believes that a positive approach to politics and people’s thirst for change in Nepean-Carleton will turn the riding Liberal red in the next election. Mahfouz’s primary concerns surround education and the environment, and he is a big supporter of Stéphane Dion’s “Green Shift”, whereby levies on carbon will be offset by massive income tax cuts for Canadians. Ed has been married to Helen for 28 years, and they have one son, Talal.
