Usage

A template for Hong Kong court case citations. Mainly for citing unreported cases. All parameters are optional, though in practice there's no point in using this template unless you at least specify "id".

Examples

Enter Result Comments
{{Cite Hong Kong case|id=26850}} text Simplest case: id only
{{Cite Hong Kong case|id=26850|text=Your message goes here}} Your message goes here Overrides the default link text "text"
{{Cite Hong Kong case|list=HCA|number=5970|year=1999|id=26850}} HCA 5970/1999 Everything but litigants
{{Cite Hong Kong case|list=HCA|number=5970|year=1999}} HCA 5970/1999 Automatically generates link to search page if id not specified
{{Cite Hong Kong case|number=3283|year=1995|id=46158}} Case No. 3283/1995 Case number without list
{{Cite Hong Kong case|litigants=Cheng Yin-fong v Wah Kee Vegetables and On Ting Newspapers|list=HCA|number=5970|year=1999|id=26850}} Cheng Yin-fong v Wah Kee Vegetables and On Ting Newspapers, HCA 5970/1999 Full citation
{{Cite Hong Kong case|litigants=Cheng Yin-fong v Wah Kee Vegetables and On Ting Newspapers|list=HCA|number=5970|year=1999|id=26850|pinpoint=3}} Cheng Yin-fong v Wah Kee Vegetables and On Ting Newspapers, HCA 5970/1999, at para. 3 Full citation with pointer to specific paragraph; the link will take the reader directly to the paragraph in question.
{{Cite Hong Kong case|list=HCA|number=5970|year=1999|pinpoint=3}} HCA 5970/1999, at para. 3 Note that "pinpoint" does not have any effect on the link if "id" is not provided, because the link goes to a search page rather than the actual judgment.

Parameters

litigants
List of litigants, such as "Sun Er-jo v. Lo Ching and others". If a Wikipedia article using this exact string exists, a link will automatically be created. Alternately, if an article exists but another name is desired for display, a wikilink may be specified; i.e., "[[Case article|This v. That]]".
id
The database id on judiciary.gov.hk. This is not a standard form of legal citation and is not displayed; it is merely used to generate the URL for the text of the judgment.
list
the abbreviation for the law list to which the case belongs. If not given but "number" is given, it will be displayed as "Case No.". Right now this is simply displayed as-is; in the future it may be used to generate an internal link to the appropriate court. Values include:
  • Court of First Instance of the High Court
    • HCA (High Court Actions)
    • HCMP (Miscellaneous Proceedings (HCMP)
    • HCA (Admiralty Actions)
    • HCB (Bankruptcy Proceedings)
    • HCCL (Commercial Actions)
    • HCCW (Companies Winding-up Proceedings)
    • HCAL (Constitutional and Administrative Law Proceedings)
    • HCCT (Construction and Arbitration Proceedings)
    • HCPI (Personal Injury Actions)
    • HCAP (Probate Actions)
    • MC (Matrimonial Causes)
  • Court of Appeal
    • CACC (Court of Appeal Criminal Appeal)
    • CACV (Court of Appeal Civil Appeal)
    • CAAR (Court of Appeal Application for Review)
  • Court of Final Appeal
    • FACC (Court of Final Appeal Criminal Appeal)
    • FACV (Court of Final Appeal Civil Appeal)
number
the case number
year
the year in which the case was originally filed (as opposed to the date of the hearing or judgment)
text
if none of list, number, year are specified, this overrides the link text from the default "text"
pinpoint
a reference to a specific paragraph of the judgment. If "id" is provided, the link will point directly to the HTML anchor for that paragraph.
