Mary Schenck Woolman
- ... that early vocational education advocate Mary Schenck Woolman (pictured) got her first teaching position as the result of her "harsh" review of a sewing manual? Source: American National Biography article says: "...asked Woolman to critique a book on sewing instruction. Her review was harsh, and both Baker and the president of Teachers College were impressed with her analysis; therefore, they requested that she write her own views on the subject. The sewing manual she wrote....was a success, and in 1892 Teachers College appointed Woolman an assistant in the Department of Domestic Science."
