Ulster Literary Theatre

  • Most, but not all, sources qualify this with "reportedly" or suchlike. I have used a similar qualification in the article. This is not because it is folklore, I think. Rather, this is historians being cautious. One of the major sources about this subject is a doctoral thesis from 1931. The author of that thesis had access to personal papers and materials of the people concerned that have since been lost. I suspect, although I have not traced the citations in the history books all of the way back, that this quotation comes via that route. It's fine with it not having a qualification here, and there are certainly sources that do not include a qualificiation. But I thought that I had better mention it in case anyone checks against sources other than the book of quotations, such as the ones cited in the article for this. ☺

If you want a different hook, I can give you the longer quotation from McNamara, which I've only included part of, which would yield:

ALT1:... that an audience member's reaction to the Ulster Branch of the Irish Literary TheatreTemplate:`s first performance was "the show was going 'rightly' till she came along".
