Template:IPA chart/table vowels/doc
| This is a documentation subpage for Template:IPA chart/table vowels. It contains usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page. |
Usage
As a bare table (chart): {{IPA vowel chart}}.
For navigation, this chart is transcluded into navbox: {{IPA navigation}}
Positioning
By default the template is floating to the right side of the page (float:right;). Text will run left of the template, and there is no {{clear}} so it might overlap a next section.
Optionally, the float can be left by using
- {{IPA vowel chart|float=left}}.
To force an align-placement, use:
- <div align=center>{{IPA vowel chart|float=none}}</div>.
Color scheme
The table uses a color scheme that is used on more phonetic IPA boxes. Help:Using colors describes how the English Wikipedia uses a set of four related colors, based on a single color ([hue]]) e.g. green, are used on the wiki Main Page: headers, 2nd rank headers, borders and background. For another basic color, say blue, a corresponding set can be generated.
For this template, the colors are:
| Hue | Saturation 4% / Brightness 100% main background |
Saturation 10% / Brightness 100% 2nd header, accent colour |
Saturation 15% / Brightness 95% main border header background |
Saturation 15% / Brightness 75% header border only |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hue: 60 | #FFFFF5 | #FFFFE6 | #F2F2CE | #BFBFA3 |
Commons semi-copy
On Wiki-Commons there is a similar template. Comments in code here (at English wiki) ask for carefully overdoing the edits on both sides. Still there are differences (e.g., a IPA-symbol at Commons is by image, here it is by font), which make the task to synchronize them undoable for one editor. Which is a bad thing. This all originated in 2005 or so, so maybe wikimedia etc are more helpful now. (Personal note: I did not restrain from improving here on the English wiki: no bothering about Commons. Later on, when the edits are done, someone might take a look at the synchronization/copying at Commons. For now, we want the best Vowels-table at en., without compromising.).
Here follows the commented code, top of the templatecode, about the Commmons-synchronisation (moved from the template itself):
Note: A comment like <!-- my comment --> is replaced by <c-- same comment -->. Some parts were in noinclude-tags.
<c-- There is a copy of this chart on the Wikimedia Commons, under the same page title. The links are different in form:
Wikipedia: [[Close front rounded vowel|y]]
Commons: [[:Image:Close front rounded vowel.ogg|y]]
When making edits to this chart, it is recommended that you make the same edits to both copies.
Using a browser text size between 6 and 20 pixels is recommended when viewing this chart. -->
<c-- Wikipedia only: -->
<c-- It's not necessary to add the "w:" in links from here, as that refers to the English Wikipedia, which is what you're looking at. -->{{SpecialChars}}
<c-- above Wikipedia only --></nowiki>
(Here the body code of the template
<c-- Commons only: {{PAGENAME}} above Commons only -->
