Moschino (Italian pronunciation: [moˈskiːno]) is an Italian luxury fashion house, specialising in leather accessories, shoes, luggage and fragrances. It was founded in 1983 by Franco Moschino in Milan.[1] Moschino and his fashion label became famous for his innovative, colorful – sometimes eccentric – designs, for his love of fairies, for his criticisms of the fashion industry and for his social awareness campaigns in the early 1990s.

The owner of the Moschino labels is Moschino SpA, the company which was acquired by Aeffe SpA (producer of Moschino since 1983) and Sportswear International SpA (SINV HOLDING S.p.A. since 2006) in 1999. Moschino SpA carries out its brand management, licensing agreement activities, communication and coordination of the commercial policies autonomously. In 2006, Moschino designed the outfits for the opening ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.[2]

Controversy

In January 2019, Moschino was sued by former employee for alleged of racial discrimination.[3] Shamael Lataillade, who used to manage the brand’s West Hollywood store, claimed that there was a “specific protocol” for black customers who did not appear to be wealthy. Lataillade shared details of a “Serena” codeword being used to identify these clients who were then to be watched carefully and followed while shopping. Lataillade also detailed an experience in the lawsuit in which the store called the police on a “suspicious” black male who turned out to be a signed recording artist. Additionally, Lataillade claimed a regional manager took photos of customer license plates on more than one occasion and would not allow customers labelled "Serena" to try on clothing items. Lataillade believed she was wrongfully terminated on the basis of discrimination a day after she contacted corporate with a complaint about management for the second time - alleging “ongoing and atrocious harassment and discrimination based on her status as a Black, Haitian American woman.”

Although it is not explicitly stated, the term is may refer to tennis superstar Serena Williams.[4]

Moschino has denied the allegations. In a statement, the company said that it “complies with applicable equal employment laws and values and respects all customers and clients regardless of their race or background.”[5]
