Get hard (2015)
A 2015 comedy movies directed by Cohen and written by Cohen, Jay Martel and Roberts. The movie stars Will Ferrell, Kevin Hart, Tip 'T.I.' Harris, Alison Brie, and Craig T. Nelson. The stories of James King, a wealthy investment bank manager has been framed for a crime he didn't commit, and asks the man who washes his car, Darnell Lewis to help him prepare for prison.[1]
Controversy
The plot is about Hedge fund manager James King assumes that car wash business owner named Darnell Lewis has done time (being in Jail) , solely because the guy's black.[2] There is a scene where James King went to a neo-Nazi club suggested by Darnell, while parked outside of the headquarters, Darnell keeps pushing James to use a racial slur. The scene ends with James getting slapped.
The film’s sensitivity to race isn’t much better. It sees King attempting to join a white supremacist fraternity at Darnell’s instigation, and then finally bonding with a black gang who he teaches the tricks of his trade: “The stock market is gangsta,” they conclude.[3]
A quoted dialogue
Darnell Lewis: You know what? I got something to say to you all since I'm guessing this is the first time you've been forced to listen to a black man. You know maybe you guys should just calm the fuck down. Black people ain't tryin' to hurt you. I mean technically I am right now but that's only because of what you were trying to do to the white guy. Think about that. Google "I Have A Dream" assholes.[4]
On Q&A session after Monday night’s South by Southwest (SXSW) festival screening in Austin, Texas, some audience told discomfort at the film’s broad gay and racial jokes, which some thought into racism and homophobia. An audience speak up and told the writer-director Etan Cohen: “As a fellow Jew, I’ve got to say that this film seemed racist as fuck.”[5]
