Dämmernde Stadt

Dämmerde Stadt
Dämmerde Stadt
  • ... that when Egon Schiele's painting Dämmernde Stadt (pictured) was auctioned in 2018, the descendants of two former owners shared the proceeds? Source: [1] and others
  • Reviewed: to come
  • Comment: We could say "voluntary private restitution" but I didn't know what that is until researching here. Better wording welcome for a complicated story. Sadly, the image doesn't show well when small.

  • Article criteria check out, new enough, long enough, not seeing evidence of copyvio, image licensing looks suitable. But some specifics within the article:
    1. You mention "descents" a few times, I think you mean "descendants".
    2. We should be using a full stop for the currency delimiter, and "mio" doesn't mean anything in English, I think just "m" (for million I presume) would suffice.
    3. "He completed Dämmernde Stadt in 2013, signed and dated" really? I think you mean "He completed, signed and dated Dämmernde Stadt in 1913."
    4. "in Vienna.[5][3]" refs in numerical order.
    5. "400 kronen" which kronen?
    6. Both "chalk" and picture dimensions are noted in the infobox but not in the article and not referenced anywhere that I can see...
  • As to the hook, I am satisfied that we don't need to get into the techinicalitites of restitution, but would advocate the inclusion of the value of the auction, nearly $25m is quite significant. Otherwise I think it's a nice piece.
  • Symbol possible vote.svg In summary, a few article tweaks (sure, one or two are aesthetic, but two or three need addressing) and a small discussion over the hook required. The Rambling Man (REJOICE!) 11:02, 12 August 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for the review! I hope I caught the 6 points. A description would be nice, but I lack time and familiarity with the topic, especially "art language". Help welcome. I added the source for measurements, added inches, and took "medium" from the same source.

David, any chance that painting could be a bit brighter? Compare the external link. (It's just as dark in all sources, though.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:24, 12 August 2019 (UTC)

Thank you, much better! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:39, 12 August 2019 (UTC)
Almost there, I've just double-checked the MOS for "million" and realised that we don't know which kind of $ was used, so here's 1a, what do you think Gerda?
ALT1a: ... that when Egon Schiele's painting Dämmernde Stadt (pictured) was auctioned for US$24.6 million in 2018, the descendants of two former owners shared the proceeds? The Rambling Man (REJOICE!) 08:26, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
yes --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:25, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
In the article, I think it's clear by mentioning New York, no? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:26, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
I'm not sure, per MOS:CURRENCY the article is not country-specific, so it would be worth being explicit there too. The Rambling Man (REJOICE!) 10:32, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
done --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:43, 13 August 2019 (UTC)

Symbol confirmed.svg I'm content now with both the condition of the article and the suitability of the hook, so passing this nomination. The Rambling Man (REJOICE!) 10:52, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
