Usage

The football squad player and related templates are used to display the players on an association football (soccer) squad (team, club), in a consistent format within a table.

A maximal entry, using all player-related parameters, looks something like this when used with the related squad table layout templates:

Note: Flags indicate national team as defined under FIFA eligibility rules. Players may hold more than one non-FIFA nationality.

No. Pos. Nat. Player
FW Argentina ARG Nicolás Blandi[1]

Syntax of the templates

The templates can be used for any team sport, but note that there are some pre-set values of the |pos= parameter that automatically link to association football articles by default.

Most such tables are split into two vertical columns. For these, you can use the football squad start, football squad mid, and football squad end templates for layout, and then use the football squad player template repeatedly within that layout:

football squad start
<!-- For help using the below template, please see Template talk:Football squad player -->

...
football squad mid

...
football squad end

For a single-column layout, you can omit football squad mid.

Example

football squad start

...

...
football squad end
Real Madrid
No. Pos. Nation Player
FW Aleksandar Đurić
GK Iker Casillas
GK Joe Hart
...   {name}

No. Pos. Nation Player
MF Park Ji-sung
DF Gerard Pique
FW Robin Van Persie
...   {name}

In this case, the captain is listed first, followed by other members by alphabetical order of family name; in other cases, you might prefer to list them by shirt number, position or some other criteria.

Parameters

The parameters of football squad start and football squad mid are:

  • squad (or team) to specify the squad name (which should be wikilinked)
  • hidenote=y to suppress display of the above-table note about flags, e.g. when there are no flags in the table, or several such tables are being used in series and the first already has the note.
  • nohead to rename or suppress the "No." heading (e.g. to replace it with " " to blank it out when it isn't used
  • nathead=Nat. to have a nationality heading appear (it is suppressed by default, since we are usually not using flag icons). Another value can be given, e.g. |nathead=State, but the odds of this being useful per MOS:ICONS is even lower than for national flags. If in doubt, omit this parameter and the flags/nationalities.
  • poshead to suppress display of the "Position" heading with " ", when this column isn't being used; or use it to change "Position" to "Pos.", "Role", etc.

The parameters of football squad player are:

  • name (or 1) The player's name, the only required parameter. If the value is unassigned as of this writing, you can simply put "[unassigned]", "[vacant]" or the like, to indicate a vacant position. Do not add anything to the name here (citations go in the |ref= parameter, and notes go in the |note= parameter.
  • num (or no): The shirt number of the player, if they have one. If the player's number is not known, or unassigned, then you can use the character instead, or simply omit it. If omitted for all entries, use the |nohead= parameter in football squad start and football squad mid to suppress the "No." heading.
  • nat: The player's sporting nationality in (the country that the player/squad represents in international competition). Enter the 3-letter FIFA country code or the name of the country, rather than an ISO code or an adjective (e.g. "ARU" or "Aruba", instead of "ABW" or "Aruban"). Also add the |nathead=Nat. parameter to football squad start and football squad mid to enable the "Nat." heading above the icons.
    • Include only where especially pertinent, and not redundant in the context of the article. There is usually no need to include it at all except in international, multi-team contexts; otherwise it will simply be visual clutter. Template:Under discussion-inline
    • Never use flag icons to indicate place of birth, citizenship, or residency.
    • Good example: Flag icons might be useful where a player table includes players from more than one national team, e.g. a table of all players suspended during a World Cup season, etc.
    • Bad example: An article on a national or regional team or championship should not have flag icons, since we already know all these players are on one or more Germany-based squads.
    • Bad example: For a national team, do not use flag icons to indicate the national origins of players on the squad who are not native to the squad's home country; the |note= parameter can be used for this.
  • pos: The position in which the player plays. If omitted for all entries, use the |poshead= parameter in football squad start and football squad mid to suppress the "Pos." heading. You can use any of the four options below for the position, and they'll be linked automatically:
    • GK for goalkeeper
    • DF for defender (including sweeper, centre-, full- and wing-back
    • MF for midfielder
    • FW for forward or striker (incl. winger and second striker)
    • some other value; one example would be using GK to replace second and subsequent occurrences of "GK" with a "G" then a zero-width non-breaking space in it then a "K", so that the template does not redundantly link it; another case could be to use AM if there is some reason to be more specific, or a similar link to another position in another sport if the template is being used for non-soccer purposes.
  • ref: A reference footnote, which appears immediately after the player name. It must be in the form |ref=. This keeps the reference citation code from being confused with part of the player's name in metadata.
  • note (or other): This is an optional parameter. You can add any related info to this parameter, like specifying captain, vice-captain, whether the player is on loan, etc. It will show additional info in the parentheses (round brackets) after the player name.

Examples

The following code (for a table of players, one of whom is not an Argentine national, on an regional Argentine squad):

football squad end

produces this table:

  Pos. Nation Player
DF Matías Caruzzo
MF Damián Escudero
MF Jesús Méndez
MF Ribair Rodríguez
FW Franco Cángele
FW Nicolás Blandi[2]

Note that one example includes a |note= parameter, indicating the player's non-Argentine citizenship nationality, and that the last example includes a reference footnote with the "ref=" parameter, which inserts citation in the article's references section, e.g. this sample data in the example:

  1. Lastname, Firstname (2014), Title of Work
  2. Lastname, Firstname (2014), Title of Work

If there's a consensus at the article in question that inclusion of flag icons complies with WP:Manual of Style/Icons#Use of flags for sportspersons, and will be genuinely useful in the context (here, the start of a listing of 2006 FIFA World Cup players from national teams of different nations), the following code can be used:

football squad end

to produce a table like this:

Note: Flags indicate national team as defined under FIFA eligibility rules. Players may hold more than one non-FIFA nationality.

    Nat. Player
{pos} Togo TOG Jean-Paul Abalo
{pos} Argentina ARG Roberto Abbondanzieri
{pos} France FRA Éric Abidal
{pos} Angola ANG Marco Abreu

Shortented template names

In order to make easier the work of writing new squads, some alternative, shorter, names has been designed. So, you may now use Fs start, Fs mid, Fs player, Fs end and Fs blank column as alternative templates, using the same equivalent syntax of the other ones.
