Background

This template is used to mark articles that are better in a foreign-language Wikipedia than in English Wikipedia, and thus should be translated from that language into English.

Usage

To mark an article, tag it with {{Import|language}}.

For example, {{Import|French}} generates:

Template documentation[create]

A bot will be along shortly to add the correct interwiki link to the template, which will also add a Google translation link if Google is able to translate the relevant language. If you'd like to speed the process up, you can tag the article with {{Translate|language|article=articletitle}} instead. After the article parameter is added, the template will look like:

Template documentation[create]

This template places articles in the relevant subcategory of Category:Articles needing translation from foreign-language Wikipedias.

Optional parameters

FA marking

Foreign language featured articles can be marked using fa=yes, as in {{Import|French|fa=yes}}.

Topic sorting

For languages with over 200 translation requests (currently Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish), the topic= parameter may be used to sort into a variety of standard categories:

  • topic=bio → Biography
  • topic=geo → Geography
  • topic=gov → Government and politics
  • topic=culture → Culture
  • topic=hist → History
  • topic=sci → Science and technology
  • topic=sport → Sports
  • topic=transport → Transport
  • topic=struct → Building and structure

Custom categories may also be added on a per-language basis as needed.
