1 Native American tribal jurisdictions have laws pertaining to same-sex marriage independent of state law. The federal government recognizes same-sex marriages, regardless of the current jurisdiction of residence. Same-sex marriage is legal nationwide per U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges.
2 According to an executive order issued on June 28, government agencies in Puerto Rico must comply with the Supreme Court ruling. Marriages are set to begin on July 15th.
3 It is not clear whether or not the Supreme Court's precedent applies to American Samoa.
4 Marriage licenses are currently available in the U.S. Virgin Islands, but recognition is on hold pending the final approval of an executive order.

Usage

  • To add the File:Same-sex marriage in the United States.svg map with legend to an article, add the following code:
    • {{Map of same-sex marriage in the United States|align=right|size=400px}}
      • align= and size= are both optional. If not used, image will default to right-justification and 400px image size.
  • Changes to this template may not show up immediately in various articles due to server caching. You can bypass this by purging the server cache while on an article page. For quick access to purging functions, activate the UTC live clock or Purge tab gadgets in your preferences.
