If you believe it, you can achieve it! Princess Truly is smart, courageous, and can do anything she sets her mind to do. She can tame lions, race fast cars, fly to the moon, and dance on the stars. Lively rhyme and colorful illustrations are beautifully combined to show little ones that they can do anything too. [2]
Pros
Rhyming text and softly-colored illustrations celebrate the uniqueness of Princess Truly who clearly can do anything she sets her mind to do. This picture book clearly demonstrates the delights of being a girl in today's world. Not only does the young African-American girl like certain colors, but she enjoys climbing trees and frogs. One lovely aspect from this book is how she would mention some small accomplishment such as tying her own shoes and then follow it up with an ambitious goal. Clearly, this is an homage to girl power, reminding readers that they, too, are simply fabulous and can reach the goals they set for themselves. The book's creators have girls of their own, pictured alongside a note to the reader, and those girls inspired this story. It might be a good idea to share this picture book with youngsters, boys and girls, to challenge assumptions about what girls like to do.
It is inspirational and encouraging, it reminds readers that they have the power to do whatever it is they set their mind to. In a world where few picture books feature children of color, this one focuses on all of the amazing things that can be done specifically by an African American girl, opening the door to ensure that people from all backgrounds have characters who reflect them in books. It reminding kids (using a black girl as the main character) that they are so many things and can be so many things. They need to be who they truly are. The text rhymes and both are encouraging and aspirational.[3]
This book is highly recommended for all libraries with young children. This book will give children ideas on what they may like to do and give them language to believe in themselves. This book can inspire a conversation on the strengths of their child.[4]
